Alaska Cruise - 49 Shades of Grey
25/07/2025

49 shades of grey ~ An Alaskan cruise adventure for one on board Chichagof Dream. I start my journey in Sitka and was met by Vicki the owner of Eagle Bay, who certainly puts the H into hospitality, if you have any questions, Vickie is definitely full of local insight. She also informed me that every husband has a mistress in Sitka and by mistress she meant boat. Vickie was a delightful touch of Sitka’s personality! I have the morning to enjoy the town before boarding the Chichagof Dream. There’s plenty to do I managed to fit in the Sheldon Jackson Museum, a spot of lunch in one of the many eateries and, my personal favourite, Fortress of the Bear, an educational bear rescue centre.
I can let you into a secret that my main tick list was to get close to a bear, well as close as safety allowed me without sensible supervision. If I had more time I would have loved to visit the Alaska Raptor Centre where you will see firsthand the rehabilitation of injured birds of prey. I would have to amble through the Sitka National Historical Park. Where I was told that you can walk through towering spruce trees, follow moss-draped trails, and see carved totem poles and the occasional bear. (Handy hint, don’t forget your bear spray, it’s not just a fashion accessory in Alaska).
I boarded the Chichagof Dream, which I can happily now pronounce correctly! (Chich a coff). With our bag already in our cabins, it’s time to start the adventure and the feeding begins, you will never go hungry on this cruise. I loved the pre-breakfast, I felt a little like the hobbits in Lord of the Rings. The food is a collection of Alaskan delights with the best salmon & crab available. There is plenty of choice and there will be something to suit everyone’s needs. Here are a selection of my highlights whilst on board.
Chatham Bay and Lake Eva
Each day offers an early morning stretch, or in my case stretching pre breakfast pastries into my mouth. We find ourselves in Chatham Bay, a remote area on the Kenai Peninsula where we witness our first humpback whale sighting. After a lesson in using binoculars and identifying wildlife we embark on a short Zodiac ride to Lake Eva.
A trail winds through the lush National Forest where spruce and hemlock trees provide a canopy overhead. Kendra, our guide, provides insightful knowledge about the diverse flora and its medicinal uses. Wildlife is abundant; bald eagles, Sitka black-tailed deer, and even bears can make their presence known. Back aboard the Chichagof Dream, we indulge in freshly made cookies & a cocktail hour, before sitting down for dinner, the perfect way to wrap up an unforgettable day.
Kake Village
A venture to Kake, a Tlingit village rich in history deeply connected to nature and traditions. Three residents welcome us, sharing insights into their heritage. We visit the third tallest totem pole in the world, standing 132 feet tall, carved in 1967. Gunnuk Creek offers another spectacle chance to spot bears fishing in its waters.
Endicott Arm
We journeyed through Endicott Arm, renowned for its pristine waterfalls, towering icebergs, and magnificent glaciers. Dividing into Zodiacs, we experience the majestic Dawes Glacier up close. The afternoon is for relaxation and exploration lounging in the ship’s library, reading books on Alaska’s history, geology, marine life, and wildlife, or simply unwinding with cards, board games, and puzzles. Expedition leaders provide informative lectures, further immersing us in the wonders of Alaska.
Shetland, Horse and Colt Island – Orca Point Lodge
Waking up in Shetland Island, we’re greeted by the sight of whales from the ship. Later, an educational lecture delves into whale habits, offering a deeper understanding of these majestic creatures. At low tide, we arrive at Horse Island and Colt Island, where a natural land bridge connects the two. Colt Island is home to Orca Point Lodge, a private retreat where we feast on an Alaskan seafood spread featuring snow crab. To conclude the evening, we gather for a bonfire on the beach, where I experience s’mores for the first time, against the backdrop of a beautiful Alaskan sunset.
Dundas Bay - Kayaking
We kayaked in Dundas Bay, even as a beginner kayaker, I felt safe & confident. What better place to start than the remote and breathtaking bay, nestled within Glacier Bay National Park. Paddling through its serene waters, surrounded by towering mountains, lush forests, and wildlife, is a truly unforgettable experience.
Glacier Bay National Park
Our final day is a true wildlife spectacle. We spot bears, sea otters, and seals while exploring Russell Island, and we then venture to Bartlett Cove. Where Glacier Bay Lodge offers a welcoming retreat. Bartlett Cove is an ideal base for exploring Glacier Bay's wonders. Adding to the adventure is the Bartlett Cove Polar Plunge a refreshing (and freezing!) dip in the icy waters of Glacier Bay National Park. A perfect way to wrap up the final night of my journey. The cruise provides glacier viewing, wildlife encounters, and cultural experiences in a remote Alaskan community. With a capacity of around 80 passengers, the Chichagof Dream provides a more personal and immersive way to explore Alaska’s breathtaking landscapes.
49 shades?
You may wonder why I have called these 50 shades of grey; this is a good thing. My week’s weather made the skies moody and atmospheric, making Alaska’s feel very untamed (nod to 50 shades). This was truly a spectacular experience and don’t forget the bears, it’s amazing how a trip can start with something as simple as wanting to see bears and evolve into a connection with nature & newfound friends. The cruise offered a level of intimacy rarely found on larger cruises with a chance to experience Alaska’s grandeur up close. This adventure is perfect for travellers seeking remote wilderness, and stunning coastal landscapes.
