Luxury Small Ship Cruise from Split to Dubrovnik
09/07/2025

I recently had the pleasure of cruising from Split to Dubrovnik aboard the MV Roko, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. This luxury small-ship journey through Croatia begins in the city of Split and makes its way down the coast, stopping at a different island each day. With overnight stays in charming ports, there’s plenty of time to explore each destination. I particularly emjoyed the daily swim stops: every morning after setting sail, the captain would anchor in a stunning bay, giving us a few hours to swim, kayak, paddleboard, and snorkel in the Croatian waters.
MV Roko operates from May to October, offering guests a luxury cruising experience along the Adriatic. The ship features 19 spacious, air-conditioned, en-suite cabins and a generous top deck perfect for sunbathing and taking in the breathtaking views of Croatia’s island-dotted coastline.
Day 1 – Split
Our journey began in the vibrant coastal city of Split, located on Croatia’s stunning Dalmatian Coast. Known for its unique blend of historic charm and modern energy, Split made for the perfect starting point. We boarded our small ship around 2:00 PM, where a delightful spread of welcome snacks and drinks awaited us. This informal gathering was a great way for guests to meet, mingle, and begin to unwind in the relaxing atmosphere onboard.
After settling into our cabins and unpacking, we regrouped on the back deck for a guided walking tour of Split’s Old Town. Led by a knowledgeable local guide, the tour introduced us to the city’s fascinating history, with a particular focus on the impressive Diocletian's Palace. It was a wonderful way to get oriented and immerse us in the rich cultural heritage of the area.
Following the tour, we had some free time to explore Split at our own pace before reconvening for our welcome dinner. Served in the ship’s dining room, the meal truly set the tone for the culinary delights to come. Prepared by our talented onboard chef (a local with a passion for Croatian cuisine) the dinner included a delicious selection of traditional dishes infused with Mediterranean touches.
Day 2 – Hvar
Day 2 began with a 7:00 AM departure from Split port. Today we were sailing to Hvar, Croatia’s longest island and the sunniest in all of Europe, with 2,724 hours of sunshine annually. I had a cup of coffee and read my book on the sun deck, enjoying the sunshine and watching the beautiful coastline drift by.
Before I knew it, breakfast was being served. This was our first breakfast onboard, and I knew it was going to be a week of delicious food. We were greeted with fresh fruits, yoghurts, cold meats, cheeses, pastries. There were also hot food options: bacon, sausages, eggs made to order, and cooked Mediterranean vegetables. After breakfast, I returned to the top deck and relaxed in the sun. We had a couple of hours of sailing before stopping for our swim stop of the day. I used the time to lounge on a sunbed and soak up the Croatian sun.
We arrived at our swim stop off the island of Brač at 10:30am. As soon as the ship anchored, we were allowed into the crystal-clear sea. Onboard the ship, a variety of swim ‘toys’ were provided, including paddleboards, kayaks, snorkel equipment, floaties. We enjoyed a refreshing swim in the calm waters under the warm sun. We all gathered in the dining room for lunch at 1:00 PM. Lunch was served daily and consisted of Croatian and Mediterranean-inspired meals.
Shortly after we finished, we docked in Hvar port and promptly met outside the ship for a walking tour of Hvar Town. Led by another knowledgeable local guide, the tour took us through the hidden streets of Hvar, exploring the island’s history. I particularly enjoyed learning about a small group of nuns who lived in a convent and made local agave lace. Once the walking tour had finished, we had the entire evening to explore at our leisure. Our tour manager offered to lead a walk up to the Spanish Fortress, which provided breathtaking views of Hvar, including a bird’s-eye view of the port below. Entrance to the fortress was €10; however, even if you didn’t go in, the view from the top alone was worth the (slightly) steep climb. Within the fortress there is a bar and café, where people can sit and enjoy a coffee or a cold beer, while looking over the views of Hvar below.
That evening, we had our first meal out at a local restaurant. We stumbled across a small, family-run place tucked away in one of the backstreets of Hvar Town. After dinner, we enjoyed an ice cream by the port before heading back to the ship for the night.
Day 3 – Vis
This was an early departure at 5:00 AM, but the captain set off gently so as not to wake anyone. We had to leave early for the Blue Cave excursion — and it was worth the early start. We were asked to be ready for 7:00 AM, when coffee and pastries were served before arriving at our destination. We disembarked and split into three groups to be taken into the Blue Cave by zodiac. This hidden gem is lit up as sunlight hits the sandy sea floor at just the right angle and reflects into the cave, creating an ethereal blue glow throughout the cave.
Once back onboard, we were greeted with a delicious breakfast buffet, which we tucked into while sailing to our next swim stop.
After lunch, we docked at the island of Vis — the one I was most excited to explore, as it was used as a filming location for Mamma Mia! 2. Our cruise manager offered an optional wine-tasting excursion for €40pp, which several guests took part in. I chose to spend the afternoon exploring Vis at my own pace, having dinner and drinks in a local restaurant and enjoying a swim off one of the piers.
You also have the option to hire scooters; these can average out at around €30-€50 for the scooter. The island is quite small meaning you can explore a lot of the island during your free afternoon here just by scooter. A lovely place to visit is the beautiful cove of Stoncica, only around a 25 minute drive from Vis port.
Day 4 – Korčula
We departed Vis at 7:00 AM, heading for Korčula. After another idyllic swim stop in the sparkling Croatian sea, we arrived in Korčula at around 2:00 PM. Once docked, we met outside the ship for a guided walking tour of the town, led by a local guide.
Following a pleasant stroll through the Old Town, we had the afternoon free to explore. We climbed the clock tower in the main square for €5pp — a small price for the great overhead view of the town.
Later, we discovered a tucked-away restaurant where we enjoyed an incredible seafood pasta dish. After dinner, we headed to a bar at the top of a tower, the only access to the top is by ladder. The drinks are sent up via a 'pully' from the bar located below. This bar has incredible views of Korkula, located on the sea front you get great views of the sea and the old-town.
We later enjoyed a drink back on Roko, sat on the top deck while the sun was setting over the horizon.
Day 5 – Mljet
We arrived at Mljet National Park late in the morning. After a bit of time to relax on the boat or take a short stroll, we were served lunch.
In the afternoon, our cruise manager led us into the park, explaining the two lakes and the best cycling and walking routes. We hired bikes for €15pp and cycled around the big lake, stopping halfway to take a small taxi boat to the island in the middle of the lake.
To signal the boat, you stand on the dock and wave a red flag — a charmingly rustic system. On the island, there’s a café/restaurant and a small church. It takes about 10 minutes to walk around the whole island.
After a stroll, an ice cream, and an ice-cold beer, we cycled the rest of the lake loop, which took around 40–60 minutes. It really is the best way to experience the park, though there’s also a complimentary boat and walking trails for those who prefer. After a lovely walk or a bike ride, a swim in the lakes is a lovely way to stop, cool down and relax. We stopped after we finished our bike ride, stopping at an entrance to the small lake where we took the opportunity to take a dip in the illuminating blue waters. That evening was our Captain’s Dinner. All the crew and the captain joined us for a special four-course meal prepared by our exceptional onboard chef. Everyone dressed up for the occasion. We were treated to complimentary prosecco, a delicious dinner — and a lively evening of dancing, singing, and even a conga line around the boat.
Day 6 – Slano
We enjoyed an early morning swim in the sea, before setting off for our oyster excursion!
Everyone was especially excited for today’s oyster-tasting excursion. After lunch, a bus organised by the cruise manager took us on a 30-minute drive to a local fishing port, where we transferred to a taxi boat that brought us to a floating pontoon — essentially a floating restaurant.
We sat at wooden tables while the hosts demonstrated oyster farming. The tasting included three oysters each, a pot of freshly cooked mussels for the table, and carafes of local wine.
Non-seafood options of bread, cheese, and cold meats were also provided. After a couple of fun-filled hours eating, drinking, and singing, we headed back to the ship. That evening, our cruise manager ordered pizza onboard and hosted a quiz. Most passengers joined in, splitting into teams for a fun and friendly competition.
Day 7 – Dubrovnik
On our final morning, we sailed into Dubrovnik and docked at Gruž port just after breakfast. Our cruise manager gave us a final briefing before we had some free time to relax or head into town.
After lunch, an organised transfer took us to the gates of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, where our guide met us for one final walking tour.
We then had the afternoon and evening to explore at our leisure. We walked the ancient walls and found a local bar for a final drink in the sunshine, before enjoying dinner. Later, we caught the local bus back to the ship for our final night onboard Roko.
Day 8 – Home
After one last breakfast, it was time to say goodbye to the wonderful friends we’d made, as well as the amazing crew. Transfers had been arranged for each passenger, taking them either to the airport or to their hotel for the night.
My week sailing from Split to Dubrovnik onboard Roko was exceptional. Each destination was just as memorable as the last, every meal — both onboard and ashore — was delicious, and the crew were warm, attentive, and highly professional. They ensured everything ran smoothly and that each guest had the best possible experience.
