We loved the Spirit of Chartwell barge. It's elegant and historic. The small number of passengers (22) and the fabulous, attentive crew made this cruise exceptional. The Douro River wine region is beautiful, and our day trips off the barge were perfect in length and content. We highly recommend this small boat cruise.

Spirit of Chartwell has a professional tour escort available to help passengers choose and participate in Shore Excursions. Land tours can be adjusted depending on road conditions, traffic, holidays and weather conditions. When meals are included in an excursion, the price includes wine and water. Presentations about the excursions will be given each night on board.

The Spirit of Chartwell was chosen from hundreds of candidates by the British Royal Family to be the royal vessel during the celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The rich interiors of the ship, whose unique and distinctive design was inspired by the famous Orient Express luxury train, testify to why it was selected for this incredibly special occasion.
After these high-profile celebrations, the Spirit of Chartwell found its new home on the River Douro in September 2012. The ship has been restored and redecorated while preserving various decorative details originally chosen by the royal family.
With just 14 double cabins and a royal suite, the Spirit of Chartwell resembles a private club, where passengers can enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed and luxurious setting on the Douro River. Ideal for events for groups of friends, families, or companies.
