Only in the Galapagos Will Traffic Be Held Up by an Iguana
Within the first 15 minutes of arriving in the Galápagos Islands, we quickly learned just how respected and protected the wildlife is here.
After leaving the airport, we boarded a local bus for what should have been a very short, five-minute journey to the dock where we would embark on our expedition vessel.

Halfway along the road, the bus suddenly came to a stop. At first, none of us knew why. Then one of the local Naturalist Guides calmly stepped off the bus and made his way to the roadside. As we looked closer, we realised he was carefully encouraging a Land Iguana to continue its journey and safely cross the road.

I can honestly say that before this moment, I had never been delayed in traffic because of an Iguana. Yet this small encounter perfectly captured the spirit of the Galápagos. From the very beginning, it was clear that the islands' remarkable wildlife takes priority, and that both locals and visitors share a deep respect for protecting these extraordinary animals.
