White Christmas in Antarctica

Starting in Buenos Aires, you have the opportunity to discover the ”Paris of South America” before embarking on MS Fram in Ushuaia, the world´s southernmost town, and setting course for the Southern Ocean.

Christmas in South Georgia
En route to Antarctica we first reach the Falkland Islands with its seamless horizons, vast open spaces, stunning white sand beaches and rich wildlife, with penguins walking by like you are no stranger at all. Then into open sea, where exciting and informative lectures await you on your way to South Georgia; we will arrive in time for Christmas Eve. In addition to a traditional Norwegian celebration on board the ship, we will explore abandoned whaling stations, the whaling museum, a Norwegian whaler’s church and the tiny graveyard in Grytviken where we can pay our respects to one of Antarctica’s greatest explorers, Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Next on the route is The South Orkneys, every photographer's dream with majestic snow-capped mountains, blue icebergs and an endless wilderness. This is the last stop before we head on to Antarctica and some of the most remote places on earth.

New Year's Eve in the Antarctic
In Antarctica, the highlights queue up during our four days here. We will take our backpacks and hike the distinctive ring-shaped volcanic caldera of Deception Island, visit Half Moon Island, considered a jewel of diversity in the polar landscape, and navigate through the 48-kilometre Antarctic Sound that offers the most impressive manifestations of icebergs that we will see on our voyage. On Brown Bluff, Adélie and Chinstrap penguins, Kelp gulls and Cape petrels nest below spectacular cliffs that rise 745 metres from the sea. And of course, there are majestic whales breaking the surface that you yourself may get even closer to by putting a kayak onto the water.

Returning back, we will once again sail through the Drake Passage, notorious among the early polar explorers, before disembarking in Ushuaia.

Please note: Your price includes one hotel night in Buenos Aires before the voyage including breakfast and return economy flights between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia.

DAY 1: Buenos Aires
December in Buenos Aires means springtime, and you'll find the city's beautiful violet jacaranda trees bursting into bloom alongside 1,000 different colourful roses at the Rose Garden Walk (Paseo del Rosedal). Join an optional city tour or discover the city under your own steam.
DAY 2: Buenos Aires/Ushuaia
After a night in a first class hotel, you fly to Ushuaia where MS Fram awaits you. After embarkation there will be a welcome meeting where you can meet your fellow travellers, and the Captain introduces you to his officers and the Expedition Team. In the evening we set a course for the Southern Ocean and the Christmas adventure that awaits us.
DAY 3: At Sea
Our first full day on board will be spent at sea, where you may choose to participate in the first of many on board lectures. As we head across the open sea, keep an eye out for wildlife including the graceful albatross and Dusky dolphins.
DAYS 4 - 5: Falkland Islands
The Falklands are teeming with wonders of wildlife and nature; experience personal encounters with penguins or the beauty of delicate flowers. Here the wildlife comes close to you, stops and takes a glance, before continuing on its way in total disregard to your presence. When we arrive here, most of the wildlife including the Gentoo and Rock Hopper penguins, sea lions, elephant seals and black-browed albatross will have young, giving you some great photo opportunities! The capital Stanley is easy enough to discover on foot as most of the shops and services are centred on the port. The museum, post-office featuring first day covers and perhaps most importantly Stanley’s lively pubs are all here.
DAYS 6 - 7: At Sea
During the next two days at sea our lecture series will continue. Fram’s Expedition Team is well versed in every facet of South Georgia, from its geology and glaciology to the mating rituals of Sooty albatrosses and King penguins, and the legends of the old Norwegian whalers.
DAYS 8 - 9: South Georgia
There is nowhere quite like South Georgia with its mountainous scenery, glaciers and beaches teeming with wildlife. It is a superb place to celebrate Christmas Eve! On board we invite you to take part in a real Norwegian Christmas with traditional food from Norway. While we are in South Georgia we plan to visit a site where huge Elephant seals bask on the sand, Fur seal pups race in and out of the water, albatrosses soar overhead, and King penguins gather in abundance. Explore abandoned whaling stations, the whaling museum, a Norwegian whaler's church and the tiny graveyard in Grytviken where we can pay our respects to one of Antarctica’s greatest explorers, Sir Ernest Shackleton.
DAY 10: At Sea
As we continue to Antarctica we learn more about the wonders of the Deep South, focusing on the history, environment and wildlife of Antarctica. Our series includes a thorough introduction to the Antarctic visitor guidelines from the Antarctic Treaty and International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO).
DAY 11: South Orkneys
The deserted South Orkney Islands are every photographers dream with majestic snow-capped mountains, blue icebergs and an endless wilderness. We spend one day exploring these islands.
DAY 12: At Sea
We will cruise by the Washington Strait and Coronation Island before setting course towards Elephant Island and Antarctica.
DAYS 13 - 17: Antarctica
Among the highlights of our four days in Antarctica is Deception Island one of the South Shetlands; a distinctive ring-shaped volcanic caldera. This is one of the few places in Antarctica where we can take our backpacks and hike. Hiking on an active volcano is a rarity, and being in Antarctica makes it even more special. You can also look forward to visiting Half Moon Island, considered a jewel of diversity in the polar landscape. It can be difficult to navigate through the 48-kilometre Antarctic Sound due to ice, but it offers the most impressive manifestations of icebergs that we will see on our voyage. On Brown Bluff, Adélie and Chinstrap penguins, Kelp gulls and Cape petrels nest below spectacular cliffs that rise 745m from the sea. The stony beach is suitable for shore landings outside of nesting season.
DAYS 18 - 19: Drake Passage
The voyage from the Antarctic Peninsula to Ushuaia is roughly 950 km (600 mi). During the two days we spend going in a northbound direction, we will continue our lecture series and recap our experiences of Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and South Orkneys.
DAY 20: Ushuaia/Buenos Aires
Situated on the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia is the largest city in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego region. Here your Christmas adventure ends with you flight back to Buenos Aires leaving in the early afternoon. If you want some sun and warmth after spending time in the coldest place on earth, we recommend you participate in one of our post voyage programmes in Buenos Aires.
Please Note:
Planned landings will depend on weather and ice conditions. We reserve the right to change the scheduled program and itinerary.
