Alaska: A Remarkable Journey (NG SeaBird & SeaLion)

Embark on a 15-day adventure between Sitka, Alaska, and Seattle, Washington exploring three of the most appealing wild regions in the Pacific Northwest: Alaska’s Inside Passage, coastal British Columbia, and Haida Gwaii. You’ll sail into mist-shrouded fjords and past crashing glaciers, see brown bears stalking shores, and eagles flying. And in Haida Gwaii you’ll meet artisans and experience the resonance of their cultural heritage and artwork. With our special access to Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site, you’ll see ancient village sites, and the endemic species that make Haida Gwaii the 'Canadian Galápagos.'

Alaska: A Remarkable Journey (NG SeaBird & SeaLion) itinerary:

DAY 1: Seattle/Embark
Arrive in Seattle and embark National Geographic Sea Bird or National Geographic Sea Lion. (D)
DAY 2: Gulf Islands, British Columbia
Cruise amid the lush Gulf Islands in the Strait of Georgia—which runs between mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island—and search for some of the many marine mammals that inhabit these waters. (B,L,D)
DAY 3: Johnstone Strait and Alert Bay, British Columbia
Visit the U’mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay, where we’ll watch traditional First Nations performances and learn about the art and culture of the Kwakwaka’wakw people. (B,L,D)
DAY 4-5: Inside Passage of British Columbia
Sail northward along steep and rugged coastline looking for whales, dolphins, bears, deer and other wildlife. Go ashore to explore or kayak the remote bays and inlets. (B,L,D)
DAY 6-9: Haida Gwaii
With very special permission, we explore the islands of Haida Gwaii, including the incredible Gwaii Haanas National Park & Haida Heritage Site. We will be joined by a Haida Interpreter for our days among the islands, wildlife and cultural sites. In the Haida ancestral town of Old Massett, we are invited into a home of a local carver for a feast of traditional foods and dance. Meet Haida artists and see their workshops. Visit the Haida Heritage Center at Kay Llnagaay to learn about the incredible history of the Haida people and their renowned artwork, a spiritual endeavor. See the ancient totems at SGang Gwaay (Ninstints), kayak and take Zodiacs around the incredibly biodiverse islands in Gwaii Haanas. (B,L,D)
DAY 10-12: Alaska's Inside Passage
Spend three days encountering spectacular scenery and wildlife in Alaska’s famed Inside Passage. Explore the forested backwaters of Misty Fiords National Monument by kayak or expedition landing craft. Go ashore to visit the charming fishing village of Petersburg, and explore the surrounding area on a forest walk or on an optional bicycle ride or flightseeing excursion (at an additional cost.) Cruise and kayak past the glacially carved cliffs of Tracy or Endicott Arm—both spectacular fjords that harbor orcas, humpback whales, and Steller sea lions. See the soaring Dawes or South Sawyer Glacier up close and take a cruise on an expedition landing craft for unparalleled view of sculpted iridescent icebergs. (B,L,D)
DAY 13-14: Glacier Bay National Park / Inian Islands / Chichagof Island
By special park permit, spend a full day among the enormous glaciers and expansive wilderness of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Twin Expedition ships, National Geographic Sea Bird & Sea Lion, can reach places inaccessible to larger ships due to their small size, yet each can comfortably accommodate 62 guests. The feeling, is often compared to that of a large private yacht, with everyone integral to the adventure. Accessibility means freedom. Our captains have decades of sailing experience in the regions we explore. They know when and where to navigate so that you feel the places we visit are all ours.


Thanks to our sturdy fleet of Zodiacs and virtually untippable kayaks, you can be off the ship and out exploring within a moment’s notice. Launch your kayak from a picturesque beach, hike with our naturalists into the rain forest or walk easily along a sandy dune. During your time with us, our expedition staff likes nothing better than to surprise and delight you by directing the ship toward breaching whales, bow-riding dolphins or into an alluring cove.

Our seasoned crew consists of expert Zodiac drivers and considerate service providers. Their energy, enthusiasm and field expertise are sure to enhance your experience. This is what expedition travel is all about: not just seeing wildness, but being out there, in it.

Public Areas: Our ships feature a Library; Lounge with full-service bar and facilities for films, slide shows and presentations; Observation Deck; partially covered Sun Deck with chairs and tables, and LEXspa. Our "Open Bridge" policy provides guests and opportunity to meet our Officers and Captain and learn about navigation.

Meals: Served in single seatings with unassigned tables for an informal atmosphere and easy mingling. Breakfast is a wide selection buffet and lunch is often served family style. Menu emphasizes local flair.

Cabins: All face outside with windows, private facilities, and climate controls.

Expedition Equipment: Bow Camera, hydrophone, kayaks, snorkeling gear, Splash-Cam, underwater video camera, video microscope and Zodiac landing craft.

Special Features: Guest internet access, Wellness Program. A Video Chronicler and a ship's doctor will be onboard all voyages.
